Exhibition June 2022: Propositions: Art about Abraham Lincoln

Over a dozen lithographic and drawn prints considering the legacy of Abraham Lincoln will be showing at Vivid Gallery in Winnetka in June 2022.


Julie Cowan – Propositions: Art about Abraham Lincoln features a group of lithographic and drawn prints that consider the life and impact of Abraham Lincoln. The works represent a range of subjects related to Lincoln, as well as many different ideas that were born of research done during the past year. As part of an artist residency, I worked with 20 other artists to create a piece culminating in an exhibition in Springfield Illinois in September 2022. These additional works were also created during this period.


My techniques include lithographic printing, hand coloring, drawing, and material layering of text, executed in ink, colored pencil, watercolor and paint.


This journey into Abraham Lincoln traveled along many paths. There are pieces about Lincoln’s body, his marriage, his historical period, his houses, and his words. The residency provided time with Lincoln scholar Graham Peck, Wepner Distinguished Professor of Lincoln Studies at the University of Illinois Springfield. He assisted me and other residency artists with academic resources and historic fact-finding to support the creation of our unique artworks. Here is a number of the works:
